COMPLETED SHELTERS
UPCOMING SHELTERS
Outlined below is an overview of the process and commitments involved with each
shelter venture undertaken by HomeAid Orange County and the project’s Shelter Development Team.
1 – ON THE DRAWING BOARD
To begin the process, a care provider comes to HomeAid Orange County with a remodeling, renovation or new construction project that will add shelter beds to serve Orange County’s homeless. Typically, the care provider, the operational arm of the project, brings money, land and/or a building to the project. The care provider’s proposal is then presented to the HomeAid Orange County’s Board of Directors who assess the project based on established criteria, and determine if there’s a potential match within the building industry and their associates.

Those served by HomeAid and its care providers include women in crisis pregnancy; abused children; victims of domestic violence; homeless adults living with HIV/AIDS; the mentally challenged; homeless youth; and those families and individuals who find themselves homeless as a result of job loss or catastrophic illness.
2 – RECRUITING A BUILDER CAPTAIN
Based on the approved elements and location of the shelter development, HomeAid approaches leaders within the building industry to serve as the volunteer “Builder Captain” for the project. A Builder Captain could be a residential homebuilder, a commercial builder, a remodeler, a property management firm, or a trade association.
3 – ASSEMBLING THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM
Led by the Builder Captain, and with the support of HomeAid Orange County, a team of consultants, subcontractors, suppliers and other associates are lined up for the project.
4 – MOVING IN
A dedication ceremony takes place shortly after the completion of the project. This ceremony provides the opportunity to honor and recognize those who gave so generously of their time, talent and resources to serve those in need. The keys to the new home are then presented to the care provider and residents prepare to move in.
WHAT IT WOULD COST
Below is a breakdown of open market subcontracting costs for a 5,000 square foot new construction. HomeAid Orange County seeks to obtain in-kind and cash donations to cover these expenses. Through this approach of contributed pro bono and discounted costs, HomeAid is able to garner potentially 60% - 80% of time, services, labor and materials donated to the project.
