Fullerton Interfaith New Vista Shelter a HomeAid Orange County shelter development built by Builder Captain Brookfield Homes and designed by Lind & Associates Architecture recently garnered the 2006 Community Spirit Gold Nugget Award presented at the Pacific Coast Builders Conference held in San Francisco.
The project was acknowledged in part for the development team's ability to meet the site and building design challenges, which were ultimately overcome through a combination of City cooperation and creative design features.
Working in partnership with Lind & Associates Architecture; iba Design Group; Lim Chang Rohling & Associates, Inc.; and ima + design; the Brookfield Homes building team - led by project manager, Brian Geis - provided an aesthetically pleasing 1,900-square foot home.
The home integrates into the site with four existing buildings, built between 1900 and 1989, and enhances the overall neighborhood ambience. Comprised of four private rooms with bathrooms, a common cooking area, dining area and 4 garage spaces within a home-like environment, this facility offers a safe haven and provides homeless families with a solid foundation from which they can begin again.
New Vista, collaboratively crafted the shelter "from the ground up," was built with combined cash and in-kind donations of $669,116 contributed by nearly 100 trade partners and suppliers working with the Builder Captain and the Fullerton Interfaith Emergency Services, the New Vista Care Provider. Funds raised included contributors from churches, synagogues, individuals and businesses, as well as grants from foundations and government agencies.
