John Laing Homes' Employees Roll Up Their Sleeves
To Aid The Homeless

TUSTIN, CA (July 29, 2004)

Nicki Philips of John Laing Homes joined 60 fellow employees for a recent Volunteer Day at HomeAid Orange County's Village of Hope shelter development on the Tustin Marine Air Station Base. When completed, this shelter serving homeless families will provide 192 beds.
John Laing Homes has joined Village of Hope Builder Captains, commercial builder, Oltmans Construction; and Lennar Communities in a collaborative effort to develop HomeAid's largest project to date. Each Builder Captain and its trades are taking on various tasks, some doing the work directly and others by donating money to the shelter development.

As part of their scope of work, John Laing Homes (a national company that supports communities through charitable giving), brought 60 employee volunteers to the project armed with paintbrushes, screwdrivers and hammers ready to take on cabinet doors, mirrors and painting. The collaborative effort prepared the former military barracks for the next phase of finish work, the installation of carpet and vinyl flooring to be donated by Leonard's Carpet Service.

Located on Red Hill near Barranca Street in Tustin, Village of Hope is a $24 million, 130,000 square-foot multi-use facility designed by Gensler and Axcess Architects and will house a kitchen; dining areas; a donation intake warehouse; and an

8,000 square-foot auditorium, along with support office space designed to serve as the nucleus for the site. Additionally, the top floor renovation of the existing barracks will provide living quarters for homeless men, women and children in configurations of single and family spaces, while the lower floors will accommodate medical offices, dental offices and vocational training.

Unlike most other shelter developments, Village of Hope (slated for completion in spring 2005), will provide living areas where families can stay in tact as they move toward self-sufficiency. This successful base re-use planning paradigm is the result of a multi-entity collaborative approach with companies such as John Laing Homes that provide opportunities for their organization and employees to give back to the communities in which they live and work.
