Mother's Day takes on a new meaning at Casa Teresa

ORANGE, CA (May 29, 2004)

Eagle Scout sons and dads donate time and talent to Casa Teresa's Hannah's House.
In the midst of manicured lawns, hillside mansions, and the yacht-filled harbors of affluent Orange County, are shattered futures where pregnant women struggle to find a place to bring their unborn children into the world. As Mother's Day approaches, the plight of these challenged moms seems more poignant than ever.

Of the 30,000 homeless men, women and children residing in our county, pregnant women and their innocent newborns represent one of the most provocative segments.

HomeAid Orange County, the charitable arm of the Building Industry Association, has made significant strides in providing shelter for these homeless pregnant women, including the latest project, Casa Teresa's Hannah's House – a HomeAid Orange County shelter development dedicated earlier this week. The newly completed Hannah's House renovation, adding six beds was led by Builder Captain, Fieldstone Communities, Inc. under the leadership of Steve Cameron, with design by Dawson Hannouche Partners Architects & Planners along with exterior landscape provided by Land Arc West and Silverwood Landscape. An additional 20 trades provided materials and labor in order to complete the project.

Special exterior features including a white picket fence, donated by Eagle Scout Troop #12 with Josh Kihm, son of Tim Kihm, vice president of Client Services for the Keith Companies - a long time HomeAid supporter - was a surprise addition to the overall ambience of the Orange-based shelter. A second Eagle Scout Troop #106 donated and built a backyard gazebo. In addition to providing the labor, both troops raised the money to buy any added materials they needed to complete their respective projects.

The Eagle Scout troops dedicated over three months to the project culminating in 30 teams of sons and fathers working together to provide a special environment for some courageous women seeking shelter and new lives for themselves and their newborns.

This collaborate effort of builders, community and volunteers is at the heart of every HomeAid shelter development. As we get ready to celebrate mothers everywhere on this special day, it gives pause to realize that homelessness is a circumstance, not an identity. Everyone who is homeless is someone's husband or wife, a brother or a sister, a daughter or a son, a father or a mother.

To all of the many BIA members, community and trades who have worked on Hannah's House and the other 34 shelter developments scattered throughout Orange County, please accept HomeAid's gratitude for your continued support as together we work to provide housing for those in need.
