Over 600 tons of concrete walls raised at
closed Tustin Base

TUSTIN, CA (April 19, 2004)

HomeAid Orange County's $24 million shelter development venture, Village of Hope, located on 5.1-acres on the Tustin Marine Corps Air Station is kicking into high gear with the second phase of the new construction on "Building B" – a multiple use facility and the largest of the new construction components of the project. Bragg Crane, a long-time HomeAid supporter, is responsible for the task of tilting up thirty-four 15-20 ton concrete wall panels.

Located on Red Hill near Barranca Street in Tustin, Village of Hope is a 130,000 square-foot facility designed by Gensler and Axcess Architects. "Building B," consisting of 40,000 square feet, will house a kitchen; dining areas; a donation intake warehouse; and provide support office space designed to serve as the nucleus for the site. "Building A" is comprised of an 8,000 square-foot chapel/auditorium.

Additionally, the top floor renovation of the existing barracks will provide living quarters for homeless men, women and children in configurations of single and family spaces, while the lower floors will accommodate medical offices, dental offices and vocational training. The Village of Hope development is being led by Builder Captains, Oltmans Construction with Lennar Communities, and is scheduled for completion later this year.

This development, slated to become a national model of successful base re-use planning is the result of a multi-entity collaboration. The dynamic partnership efforts of Village of Hope care provider, the Orange County Rescue Mission; HomeAid Orange County; the Building Industry Association; the City of Tustin; and a host of other individual and corporate contributors is a clear demonstration of how to utilize private and public partnerships to successfully redevelop closed U.S. military bases to help the homeless.
