IRVINE, Calif. (May 19, 2009) – HomeAid Orange County’s recently completed housing development, The Village of Hope, was among the 25 finalists for the Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) prestigious 2009 Awards for Excellence: The Americas Competition. The Village of Hope, built on the former Tustin Marine Corps Air Station, is a five acre campus developed for the Orange County Rescue Mission and serves as a national model demonstrating a successful reuse of a U.S. military base. The 150,000 square foot campus has the capacity to shelter 192 homeless men, women and children in addition to serving as the county’s primary site to provide aid for victims of both natural and man-made disasters.

Established in 1979, ULI’s Awards for Excellence program is based on the Institute’s guiding principle that the achievement of excellence in land use practice should be recognized and rewarded. The full development process of a project is recognized, not just its architecture or design. Award criteria include leadership, contribution to the community, innovations, public/private partnership, environmental protection and enhancement, response to societal needs and financial viability.

The jury of renowned land use development and design experts had a challenging job selecting from more than 140 entries. Each of the 25 finalists’ projects showcased creativity, innovation and long-term thinking. The finalists’ projects were from: Little Rock, Ark.; Scottsdale, Ariz.; Tustin, Calif.; Los Angeles, Calif.; Milpitas, Calif.; San Francisco, Calif.; Denver, Colo.; Washington, D.C.; Chicago, Ill; Edgartown, Mass.; Kansas City, Mo.; New York, N.Y.; Bend, Ore.; Philadelphia, Pa.; Pittsburgh, Pa.; Houston, Texas; Nashville, Tenn.; British Columbia, Canada and Colombia, South America.

“HomeAid’s role, as it is in all of our projects, is to recruit and work with builders, architects and specialty contractors to build facilities for service providers like the Orange County Rescue Mission. The Village of Hope is a landmark project for HomeAid Orange County and it is an honor to have our work recognized by the ULI,” said Michael Schlesinger, LNR Property Corporation Senior Vice President and HomeAid Orange County board member.

The Village of Hope is HomeAid Orange County’s 43rd housing development. Lead partners on this $33 million project were Gensler Architects, Oltmans Construction, William Lyon Homes, John Laing Homes, Laing Luxury Homes, Lennar Homes, Shea Homes, The Cheesecake Factory and the Children and Families Commission of Orange County.
