HomeAid Orange County was recently honored with the Building Industry Association's (BIA) "Tribute to Excellence" Award presented at a dinner ceremony attracting more than 500 industry guests. This is the first time in the event's 13-year history that an organization was named as the honoree.
Bart Hansen, founding HomeAid board member served as the master of ceremonies. Distinguished guest, David Kuo past Special Assistant to the President Deputy Director of Faith Based and Community Initiatives flew in from Washington DC to congratulate the organization on a job well done.
Testimonial speakers included Larry Webb, John Laing Homes/WL Homes; Les Thomas, Shea Homes LP; and Vivian Clecak, Human Options. "HomeAid is the finest charitable endeavor that the building industry has ever been involved in," said Larry Webb. "Under Scott Larson's leadership, HomeAid Orange County, BIA's charitable outreach has been the inspirational leader that all other HomeAid organizations aspire to imitate. All of us at John Laing are honored to work with Scott and will continue to enthusiastically support his efforts in helping the less fortunate of Orange County," added Webb.
One of the highlights of the evening was a gift of a $10,000 check for HomeAid Orange County presented to Michael Schlesinger HomeAid board president. The donation, from the Sales & Marketing Council of Southern California (SMC/SC), is slated to support the organization's shelter development program. "We are pleased to accept this generous donation for the vital work of HomeAid Orange County," said Schlesinger, HomeAid Orange County board president. "We are positively impacting the lives of individuals and families every day and can be pleased that our efforts are also making a difference in the quality of community life. With the continued support of organizations like the Sales & Marketing Council, HomeAid will continue doing its part to aid those in need."
HomeAid was founded in 1989 under the leadership of the Orange County Chapter of the Building Industry Association of Southern California. It has brought together the services of more than 1,500 companies and 25,000 volunteers to raise over $20 million of in-kind labor and cash donations, resulting in the addition of more than 550 beds for Orange County's transitionally homeless. A total of 35 shelter projects have been successfully built and/or renovated and, currently six shelters are under construction or in the planning stages.
