HomeAid Orange County Supporter Garners Woman
in Business Award
IRVINE, CA (July 6, 2004)

(FROM LEFT) Scott Larson, executive director, HomeAid Orange County and Gina Economakos, development director, HomeAid Orange County, nominated Mari Delp, owner of Cal Pac Sheet Metal for a Women in Business Award. Delp was one of six recipients receiving this prestigious award presented by the Orange County Business Journal.
Mari Delp, owner of Cal Pac Sheet Metal Inc., was honored with one of six Orange County Business Journal Women in Business Awards recently presented before an enthusiastic audience comprised mostly of Orange County businesswomen.

Delp was recognized for her determination and community involvement distinguishing herself with a record of outstanding accomplishments. These achievements were made even more remarkable when considering the extremely difficult circumstances she faced in the process, beginning with the unexpected death of her husband.

This once stay-at-home mom found herself suddenly thrust in the throes of a devastating loss when her husband committed suicide leaving Delp and two small children behind to pick up the pieces of a business in shambles.

Armed with only her parenting skills and a willingness to "keep on keepin' on," Delp against all advice decided to buckle down, learn the business and to grow it with integrity. Faced with a mound of unpaid bills and with the IRS on her heels, Delp made the decision to rebuild the reputation of her company beginning with the repayment of outstanding debts, which she successfully managed to eradicate within two years.

Getting debt fee and becoming adept at business wasn't easy for Delp or her workers. According to her, when she first started, workers weren't sure what to expect. "Everyone was scared," Delp said, but she rallied her workers and became a role model putting in 70-hour workweeks, keeping true to her course. With little more than sheer will and some great support Delp not only saved her business, but has come to the place where she is now looking to expand Cal Pac Sheet Metal in the Inland Empire.

In the midst of these life-changing challenges, this young entrepreneur still found time and resources to give back to her industry through her contributions to HomeAid Orange County the charitable arm of the Building Industry Association. Over the years, Cal Pac Sheet Metal – providing sheet metal products for apartments, homes and commercial buildings – has contributed to numerous shelter developments, and donated to Project Playhouse, HomeAid's signature fundraiser. Her business acumen and generous heart continues to serve as an example for other entrepreneurs going against all odds.
