With two stores in Lake Forest and Yucaipa, Valley Building Materials, Valley Building Materials (VBM) – celebrating 26 years of service to architects, designers, contractors and homeowners – recently presented HomeAid Orange County with a check in the amount of $47,630. HomeAid Orange County is the Building Industry Association nonprofit charged with the mission of building or renovating shelters for the temporarily homeless. The event proceeds represent the largest single HomeAid Orange County contribution ever raised by one company, a designation Valley Building Materials has held for the third successive year.
This donation garnered from the proceeds of an annual golf tournament, was made possible through the generous support of VBM owners, John and Matt Kolendich; John Kolendich, who fought gallantly, lost his battle to cancer only two weeks before the tournament. Even though it was a very difficult time for the entire family, John's wife Kathleen and his children attended the event lending their support and solidarity in honor of John's commitment to one of his most prized accomplishments.
Chris Crowley, architectural representative at VBM organized the tournament assisted by the company's marketing manager, Corey Ramunni – both will be on board for next year's event, already in the planning stages. The newly named John Kolendich Memorial Golf Tournament presented by Valley Building Materials is tentatively scheduled for October 4, 2004.
"It was a unanimous decision to rename the tournament in memory of the man who was instrumental in the initial development of the charity event," said Crowley, who announced the name change at the awards presentation at this year's October event.
At the core of the VBM golf tournament's success are the sponsor partnerships including top contributors; Acme Brick, Blake's Wholesale Stone, California Portland Cement Company, Dynamic Cooking Systems, Eldorado Stone, M.S. International, Mountain Valley Stone/Delta Stone, Orco Block, Pepsi Bottling Group, R.H. Peterson and Sir Mix Products.
Monies from HomeAid supporters like Valley Building Materials and its supporters will contribute to providing shelter for the county's homeless. The latest statistics reflect 28,000 homeless living in Orange County with only 1,358 transitional house beds to serve them. HomeAid Orange County has provided over 50% of that number, offering shelter for domestic violence victims; abandoned or neglected youths; homeless pregnant women, adults living with HIV/AIDS; the mentally disabled and those made homeless by job loss or catastrophic illness.
Though there is much left to be done, HomeAid Orange County is pleased to report that over the course of a year nearly six thousand temporarily homeless men, women and children were given the opportunity to turn their lives around as a result of the continuing support of its partnerships in action. To date HomeAid Orange County has completed 34 shelter developments with six currently in various stages of development and construction.
