OCAR Challenges Mt. Everest to Aid those in Need
Mt. Everest Climbers Join Forces with Orange County Association of REALTORS
to Benefit HomeAid and Second Harvest Food Bank
NEWPORT BEACH, CA (July 30, 2003)

The Orange County Association of REALTORS (OCAR) is kicking off "Everest 2004," a one-of-a-kind special event to aid the hungry and homeless residing in Orange County. The 2004 pledge drive for the OCAR fundraiser – already in the works – will be formally launched at the Orange County Association of REALTORS' annual Beach Party to be held at Doheny State Park in August 8.

This unique "climb-a-thon" – is the brain-child of Orange County attorney and OCAR affiliate member Daniel Nassie, who is organizing a group that will ultimately be set to the task of climbing Mt. Everest in the Spring of 2004. Nassie will lead the first Everest team to the Base Camp pitched at an altitude of 17,578 feet, followed by an advanced crew that will then take the second trek. The goal of "Everest 2004" team members is to place a silk flag at the highest destination point ultimately reached by the climbers.

The symbolic flag signifying the purpose "To Climb the Mountain of Hunger & Homelessness" will be designed with the OCAR, HomeAid Orange County and Second Harvest Food Bank's logos. When the task is completed, the flag will be brought back from Mt. Everest and eventually displayed in the OCAR offices as a constant reminder of the organization's on-going efforts to provide aid for those in need.

Pledges for this unique fundraiser will be based on the actual altitude the team successfully climbs. The pledges will be based on a penny per foot scale. For example, if the maximum distance reached is 29,035 @$.01 per foot the pledge amount would be $290. Pledge donations will also be accepted in flat rate amounts of $200, $100, $50, and $25.

This Everest trip is more than a physical challenge, it is a quest to raise $100,000 for HomeAid Orange County and Second Harvest Food Bank so that those hungry and homeless residing in Orange County may be given a chance to change their lives.
