First Round of Project Playhouse
Awards Announced

NEWPORT BEACH, CA (October 27, 2003)

Remember when you were a kid…before computers held the key to your what shall I do today options? HomeAid, a non-profit organization that builds and renovates temporary residences for homeless men, women and children, recently announced the team winners for Project Playhouse 2003. HomeAid's successful signature fundraiser, now in its 12th year is being presented by the Children and Families Commission of Orange County.

The one-of-a-kind, kid-sized homes that comprise Project Playhouse come in a variety of configurations, and have touted such innovations as electricity, telephone, and cable hook-ups; open beam ceilings; a big screen TV; an ice cream bar; copper roofing; room-to-room intercom; and even a remote control garage door for a kiddie car! Last year's event, was viewed by more than 3 million visitors and more than $367,000 was raised to help temporarily homeless individuals and families rebuild their lives.

The Kermit Dorius Award:

The Imagination Award:

The Mirror Image Award:

Judges for this year's awards were Ed Akins, Builder/Developer; David Close, Pacific Design Estates; Jiff Gill, AIA GCG Architecture; Shawn & Lindsey Green; Joyce Hanson, Commissioner, children & Families Commission of Orange County; David & Linda Mulvaney, Mulvaney & Co., Inc.; Brad Neal, The Irvine Company; Craig Reem, Churm Publishing, Inc.; Steve Scarbough, Standard Pacific Homes, Corporation; and Nick Sleven, Builder & Developer Magazine.

These award-winning builders, designers, suppliers, and trades are generously donating their time, labor and materials to construct twelve elaborate playhouses, which will be sold to the highest bidder at the HomeAid Orange County Project Playhouse public auction on November 1st. Many of these imaginary creations would cost between $50,000 and more to build.

HomeAid was founded by the leadership of the Orange County Chapter of the Building Industry Association of Southern California in 1989. Since its beginnings, HomeAid Orange County has completed 34 shelter projects. The temporarily homeless served by HomeAid include women in crisis pregnancy; victims of domestic violence; the mentally challenged; adults living with HIV/AIDS; homeless youths; and those who find themselves homeless as a result of job loss or catastrophic illness.
